Unified Workforce Development

Unified Workforce Development provides Mecklenburg County residents access to upward mobility and economic stability through integrated services and employment placement. With rapid employment, individualized support, and retention services, the UWFD social workers and job developer provide customers with wrap-around, customer directed services that addresses external and internal obstacles.

Unified Workforce Development and NC Works connect job seekers to local businesses that are hiring right now. Our on-site computer lab provides access to the Internet, resume writing support and other resources. Work First Family Assistance or Temporary Assistance for Needy Families provides cash assistance and Medicaid coverage to families with children who may be in need. You can even apply for financial assistance to pay utility bills through Energy Assistance Programs if you just need a little help to get caught up.

Who We Serve

Individuals who face multiple barriers to economic stability and upward mobility. Multiple barriers are defined by the program as:

  • History of a mental health condition,

  • History of substance abuse,

  • Over 12+ months of receiving Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) benefits,

  • Justice involved,

  • Homelessness,

  • Benefits exhausted and no longer able to serve with federal funding and/or

  • Non-custodial parent and either unemployed for a period of 12 months or more OR have a felony conviction,

  • Survivor of domestic violence, 

  • Youth aging out of the foster care system.
